This Is Propaganda: CNN Erases Operation Warp Speed, Gives Biden All Credit For Vaccine Distribution

CNN really, really wants to give President Joe Biden a win.

The cable network, whose ratings have plunged since former President Donald Trump left office, published a news analysis this week claiming Biden is single-handedly responsible for the impressive success of COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution.

For this to be true, one would have to ignore the efforts of the Trump-era Operation Warp Speed program, which engaged directly with private biomedical companies to get the vaccines developed and distributed all within a matter of months. One would also have to downplay that people in the United States were being vaccinated at a rate of roughly 1 million per day before Biden took office.

And that’s exactly what the CNN analysis does. There is not even a single mention of Operation Warp Speed in the analysis, which claims the U.S. “went from having one of the worst Covid responses to being a global leader in vaccinations under Biden.” The story, authored by CNN producer Ashley Semler, also dismisses the rate at which vaccines were being administered when the president was sworn into office.

Instead, CNN’s readers are treated to the following [emphasis added]:

For the last 100 days, President Joe Biden and his top advisers have mounted an urgent, wartime effort to get millions of coronavirus vaccines into the arms of Americans in order to beat back a pandemic that has upended the world for the better part of [a] year.

The effort, described to CNN during in-depth interviews with three of the administration’s top Covid advisers and two other White House officials, has allowed the US to go from having one of the worst Covid responses in the world to being a global leader in getting shots in arms. The interviews reveal how the Biden team inherited a pandemic at its zenith with a high demand for vaccines and little supply, along with no long-term plan to vaccinate millions of Americans. The President, at times impatient, pressed his advisers harder on ways to improve the federal government’s response to the virus.

When Biden came into office, the country was experiencing about 3,000 deaths and hundreds of thousands of new cases per day, only about 15 million people were vaccinated and there was a scarce supply of shots. To turn it around, Biden’s team brought a fresh urgency and a desire to lean on the scientific experts who had been ignored so much in the previous year.
The article continues in this vein for quite a bit, holding fast to the White House talking point that Biden was able to rescue Trump’s badly bungled pandemic response merely by “applying pressure.” The analysis also credits Biden for jump-starting the economy, which was well on its way to recovery before he was sworn in.

Insofar as vaccine distribution is concerned, Biden can only claim a small amount of credit. The first coronavirus vaccine shots were administered in the U.S. on Dec. 14, 2020. By Jan. 20, 2021, the day of Biden’s inauguration, 15.6 million people had already been dosed. Nearly a million people were being vaccinated per day by that point. In fact, on Jan. 20 alone, an estimated 1.5 million inoculations were administered. Biden, who was already vaccinated at that point, played no role in these numbers.

Biden didn’t magically turn vaccine distribution in the U.S. around with “pressure.” The president has merely picked up where his predecessor left off, kicking back and watching as a plan set in motion before he was even elected helped him surpass his initial goal of 100 million vaccinations in 100 days.

It wasn’t the Biden administration but Operation Warp Speed, private biomedical companies, and the Trump White House that put the U.S. on track to surpass the president’s vaccination goals. It was the Trump White House and Operation Warp Speed that made the to-date total of 232 million inoculations possible.

It’s one thing for the Biden White House to claim credit falsely for the efforts of those who came before them. It’s another thing entirely for an ostensibly serious news organization to make that false claim for him!

Now, to be fair, Biden did sign the COVID-19 relief bill. Its effects will probably be felt at some point in the near future. Meanwhile, if you are a Biden supporter — hell, if you’re a White House staffer — how do you read this CNN “analysis” and not feel at least a little bit ashamed?
