DeSantis Rising Popularity in Dade County, Miami

It could be the difference between running for office and being elected to do something. It could also be that Americans care more about their children’s future than a tax cut. The Democrats will change their political alliances if they abandon the working- and middle-class and adopt policies that favor the wealthy suburbs and elite colleges campuses. The shift in Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ approval in Miami-Dade County however is amazing.

Hillary Clinton won the county by almost 30 points in 2016. Andrew Gillum, DeSantis’s Democratic opponent, won the county by nearly 21% in 2018. Miami-Dade was won by President Biden by just seven points. This Democrat stronghold could be a purple county after a year’s worth of Democratic leadership at the national level. Breitbart reports that DeSantis has a +7 rating in Miami-Dade according to a new poll. This would be a 14-point increase over Biden’s win in 2020 and a 28 percent swing from the 2018 election.

A new poll shows that Hispanic voters, especially Cuban Americans are driving the swing. This is not surprising, considering the fact that the Biden administration did not support Cuban protestors during summer 2021. The Department of Homeland Security even told Cubans who fled by boat that they would be returned to the United States. It is unclear if Venezuelan Americans are feeling more positive after the Biden administration made overtures to Nicolas Maduro, the dictator, to address fuel shortages following their boycott of Russian oil.

This trend was first seen in 2020. Trump won many majority Hispanic counties, which historically went to Democrats in Texas. The primary drivers of this shift were the economy and immigration policy. Miami-Dade was also affected by the shift. It has the highest number of registered voters, so the media gave credit to the 13% drop in support for Biden in comparison to Clinton in 2016, which helped President Trump win Florida.

Despite the constant hostile media coverage of DeSantis, this change is taking place. He has pushed himself into the culture wars as governor without any apology and is now swinging back when local and corporate media engage in clearly manufactured attacks. DeSantis was the leader in fighting COVID-19 restrictions during the pandemic. This earned him the moniker DeathSantis from critics. However, Florida saw a record level of net immigration between 2020 and 2021 due to people fleeing lockdown states or school closures.

DeSantis’ latest media obsession is Florida’s parental rights in education legislation. DeSantis doesn’t back down on its policies of banning critical race theories and giving parents recourse or restricting radical sex education from kindergarten through third grade. Democrats have the chance to be fooled by themselves as the Republican-led legislature collaborates with him on cultural issues. They are laughing at themselves over the “don’t be gay” bill, which Democrats and media refer to as a Steppenwolf song.

How far is the hysteria from reality? The Daily Wire requested a poll in which pollsters gave respondents the language of the bill. It found that:

Sixty-four percent supported the Florida bill’s prohibition on teaching sexual orientation and gender identity to students in grades K-3, or at any other level unless it is presented in an appropriate way for their age and development. Twenty-one percent opposed the bill.

The Florida measure is supported by 69% of Republicans and 62% of Democrats. It also has 57% support from Independents. A notable difference was also found between whites (63%), blacks (66%), Latinos (62%), or by age.

68% support the Florida bill’s classroom instructions regulations. 79% agree that parents should have responsibility for having conversations with their children about sexual orientation and gender identity.

DeSantis clearly knows the public sentiment about the issue. DeSantis confronted Disney CEO Bob Chapek, who made comments and entered into state politics at the request of activists. After stating that he wouldn’t be bullied by false media narratives, DeSantis reacted immediately and woke corporations to change their minds. He publicly challenged the idea that this was the hill that a company catering for children and families would want to die on.

All signs point to DeSantis winning November. Politico reported that the Democratic Governors Association may withdraw from the Florida race. This poll from the county with the most registered voters will not encourage them to spend big dollars. DeSantis made Florida, including Miami-Dade County redder by focusing on cultural issues and insisting that Floridians have individual freedom. Republican candidates across the country should be aware of this. Democrats don’t own the culture war anymore, and a larger coalition of Americans, including parents, are beginning to notice how far left the party has fallen.
